Methodology
Data sources — two tiers, always labeled
Tier 1 — certified lab measurements (ventilating fans, range hoods). These come from the ENERGY STAR Certified Ventilating Fans dataset published as open data by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To earn certification, every product is tested to the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) sound procedure in an accredited laboratory and its loudness is reported in sones. These are measured values, not manufacturer marketing claims, and the same test procedure applies to every model — which is what makes cross-brand comparison meaningful.
Tier 2 — EU energy-label declared ratings (dishwashers, washing machines, dryers). No public certified sound dataset exists for these categories in the US, so we use the EU EPREL energy-label registry, where airborne acoustical noise in dB(A) is a legally required, regulator-verified field for every dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer sold in the EU — along with an A–D noise class. These are declared under a standardized EU test (dishwashers on the eco programme, washing machines during the spin cycle, dryers during drying), which makes them comparable across brands. Every model links to its official EU energy label so you can verify the figure. Two honest caveats: (1) model identifiers are EU registrations — the US version of the same appliance often carries a different model number; we surface globally-sold brands (Bosch, Samsung, LG, Miele, Whirlpool, Beko, Electrolux and more). (2) For each category we publish the quietest models from those global brands rather than the entire EU registry, since the whole registry runs to tens of thousands of region-specific variants. We never mix the two tiers in one ranking.
What we compute
- Rankings and percentiles — each model is ranked against every other certified model in its category.
- Approximate dBA — converted from sones using dB ≈ 40 + 10 × log₂(sones), always labeled approximate. Details and caveats here.
- Room sizing — bathroom fan suitability uses the HVI guideline of 1 CFM per square foot.
- Deduplication — when the same brand and model number appears in multiple certification rows, we keep the most recent certification.
Freshness
An automated pipeline re-fetches the EPA dataset weekly, adds newly certified models, flags spec changes, and rebuilds the site. Every model page shows the date its data was last fetched. If an upstream fetch fails, the site keeps serving the last verified data rather than guessing.
Limitations, stated plainly
- Fan and range hood data covers ENERGY STAR certified models. Uncertified products (including many cheap and many premium models) are not yet listed.
- Dishwasher, washer, and dryer ratings are EU energy-label declared values for EU-registered models from globally-sold brands; the US version of a model may carry a different model number, and we list the quietest models rather than the entire EU registry.
- Range hood sones are measured at the test speed defined by the certification procedure; maximum-speed noise will be higher.
- Real-world loudness also depends on installation: duct runs, mounting, and resonance can add noise no spec sheet captures.
